Golf Tournament

This leadership blog that I have created discusses, analyzes and explores everything about leadership. If you have been following my blog you might say that the weekends I deviate from the idea of leadership and explore activities, events and fun things to do. I call that leisureship. All leaders need a break from the craziness that can be leadership. What I decided to do with my blog is present leadership throughout the week and leisureship on the weekends. With the leisureship portion I highlight some things that Leaders can do during their time off to refresh and renew. Today I spent the morning at the annual Deluxe golf tournament. I have been attending this for five years now and I am really enjoying the time I spend at it. It is a scramble format and we form our own teams. I was the captain of our team and we had a great time despite me not golfing as well as I would have liked. As a team we shot 2 under. We had to use 4 drives from each player with three holes to go our team...

Fleas in your Garage

How many of you love to go treasure hunting? How many of you love to go bargain hunting? Or maybe you like to make a little money. A great way to find those treasures and those bargains is to attend a garage sale or a flea market. A way to make money is to hold one yourself or sell you wares at a flea market. Craft sales, garage sales and flea markets abound during the weekends. You can’t drive down a street without seeing a garage sale sign. The trick is to find the garage sale with the hidden treasure. My wife’s aunt seems to have a knack for finding garage sales that have great items.   Who knows you may even find a hidden treasure that you can take to Antique Road Show or Pawn Stars and get some serious cash. I enjoy going to flea markets and garage sales but I don’t go to near enough that I would like to. You have to set aside almost a full morning on a Saturday to hit as many that you would like so it makes it worth your while. The best time to go is on a Thursday mornin...

Decade Leadership Again

I hope you have been enjoying my series on decade leadership. I have been enjoying writing it. We are coming to the weekend and I will resume the Decade Leadership series again on Monday. I am still looking for comments and suggestions for other leadership concepts and ideas you would like me to address. If you want to review the Decade Leadership series go ahead and re-read some of the articles. I also did a fun article that compared leadership with certain superheroes. You can review those again. In the meantime return to my blog often and review many of the articles. Also this weekend enjoy my ongoing series that looks at leisureship. This series looks at ways leaders can relax on the weekend. That is what I will be looking at tomorrow. Thanks for reading.

Picnic Pictures

Yesterday I talked about grilling and eating barbecue. Today as part of your weekend escape from the leadership rat race I would like to talk about an event that goes hand-in-hand with grilling, picnicking. The weather is getting nicer and as you barbecue it may be a good idea to eat outside. Maybe you take your grilling to your special location. Do you have a favorite spot that you like to picnic? Here in Minnesota we have 10,000 lakes so the choices are almost endless. My favorite place to go and take the family is to head to Minnehaha Falls. It is extremely beautiful and there are numerous picnic areas. There are paths to hike along and if you are ambitious you can hike to the Mississippi river. Another great place that is local to the Twin Cities is the Coon Rapids dam. There is many picnic areas and you can walk across the river to the other side by crossing over the dam. Watching the power of the water is spectacular. My son wanted to go there during the winter that is h...

Shrimp on the Barbie

Every weekend I have been exploring ways that you as a leader can escape the grind of the leadership life and find something relaxing to do. By the title of this post you might think it is about a trip to Australia, that might be nice but you probably can't do that in a weekend from most parts of the globe. Instead it is about one of the greatest summer time activities here in Minnesota, barbecuing. What is your favorite grilling fare? Do you prefer gas or charcoal? Do you have a simple grill or a major cooking grill that allows you to create a whole meal on your grill. I enjoy eating grilled food and I do enjoy grilling. My favorite things to eat on the grill are ribs, fish and pork chops. Nothing beats a rack of ribs that when done just fall off the bone . I love to have salmon on the grill because fish is my favorite but it is also about preparation. Sprinkle that salmon fillet with lemon pepper and grill it up and enjoy. I haven't done chops in a while but when I did...

Green Jackets

This weekend it is time to relax and watch some golf. One of the greatest golf events ever will be on this weekend and it is a good time to remove yourself from the leadership grind and watch the Masters. For the past few years I have been involved in best ball fantasy golf on ESPN.com you get to pick four golfers and you can switch out after each round if you want. It is only for the four majors. That makes this weekend the first tournament to participate in. It gives me a little vested interest in watching and making sure my golfers are doing well. It is also that time of year when the weather is getting nicer, especially here in Minnesota. Then you can go out and play a round of golf. This weekend relax and enjoy watching the Masters. If watching golf isn't your thing maybe paying is more enjoyable. Taken by me at the PGA Championship at Hazeltine Who is your favorite golfer? Are you still a Woods fan, hoping to see him break Jack's record for majors? Are you a...

Mall of America

Spent the day today with the family at the Mall of America. I really like that place. Great place to walk and get some exercise as well as shop, eat and play. Going to a mall is a great way to relax with the family and get away from all of your leadership responsibilities. Every weekend leaders should spend their time relaxing and enjoying life. Maybe you enjoy leadership and that is great but having a change of pace is important. That is where I come in with my weekend blogs. I like to give you ways you can relax and escape from your leadership role. The Mall of America is a great place to do that. Any mall is a great place to do that. Maybe you have had some great successes at work recently and want to reward yourself. Go shopping and find just the right gift for yourself. If you aren't a shopper a place like the Mall of America offers theaters, restaurants, an indoor amusement park and an aquarium. You can find something for everyone at a place like the MOA. However this is ...

March Madness

Leaders need a break every now and then and March is a good time for that break. It is March Madness time and whether you are a basketball fan or not you must admit it is exciting to watch those college basketball games. This weekend escape from your busy week of leadership and enjoy some basketball. Everyone loves the cinderella story and millions of people fill o8ut brackets to see how well they can predict the champion. Leaders need that break and enjoying good competiton and watching quality basketball is always a great way to relax. This tournament is already living up to the excitement. Day two has seen two number twos go down against two 15s. Lehigh took down the might Duke and Norfolk slew the Mizzou Tigers. Just like we see the leaders of college basketball take it on the chin when the big game comes. Leaders in business can also take it on the chin. You need to have a good gameplan to prevent losing your cool during those big game leadership decisions. Part of your game...

Collections

Are you a collector? As a hobby do you love collecting things? There are many different things you can collect, it really becomes a personal preference. Collecting is also a great way to relax and escape from the busy life of a leader. It can be therapeutic to pull out your collection and look at what you have gained. There is also a joy and a pleasure in spending the weekend looking for that elusive piece to your collection. It might be that you enjoying reading about your collection. Looking up those pieces that are very rare, those pieces that you only hope could be part of your collection, the famous Honus Wagner card, or the double eagle $6 gold piece. Whatever it is that you collect or desire in your collection try to spend some time this weekend looking at your collection and enjoying it. I collect baseball cards even after all these years. I enjoy seeing who I get when I purchase a pack of cards. Since I am from Minnesota I always hope for the T...

Hobbies

Life is not just about leadership. You can't make leadership your life. Leaders need time to relax and renew and the weekends are your opportunity to do so. Over the past several weekends we have looked at enjoying the arts, music, sports, and family time. This weekend we are going to look at hobbies. What hobbies do you like to do? There are a number of things you can do that constitute a hobby. I probably won't be able to cover all of them over the next two days but we will revisit this topic some other weekend. Here is a list of just some of the hobbies you could enjoy each weekend. Find your hobby and embrace it this weekend as a release to all of your leadership duties. Hunting & Fishing Outdoors - Walking, jogging, camping, and backpacking Collecting - Stamps, coins, cards or antiques Gardening Scrap booking Cooking Where I live it is fashionable this time of year to drill a hole in the ice and fish to your hearts content. If this is your hobby (ice fishi...

The Name of the Game

From Monday - Friday we all put on our game faces and wear the uniform of a leader. A leader who is guiding others in business. Guiding them to be the best that they can be. A leader who is willing to roll the dice and take risks all for the success the followers.  The name of this game is leadership. It is the weekend and that game is in an intermission it is time to play a game of leisure. Yesterday we looked at taking some time out and playing a family game with your kids. This weekend maybe you can also find time to play a game with your friends or even by yourself. What is the name of the game that helps you relax. Maybe you enjoy the pursuit of trivia, or challenge your mind with Cranium. What is the latest adult board game, maybe that is the one of choice. It is possible you like playing cards, bridge, 500, cribbage what is your card game of choice. You might prefer playing something by yourself. Maybe you like to escape in the world of video games and you have a Call of...

Music to My Ears

As a leader finding ways to relax can sometimes be a challenge. I hope to give you many alternatives every weekend of the year. Yesterday we looked at the arts and gave you some options for viewing the visual arts, movies excluded. Today we are going to look at music I am currently listening to some great music on my computer as I write this blog. I can create a playlist and start it playing. Then I sit back, write and enjoy the inspiring music. In this day and age with Ipods, MP3s, cell phones and tablets we have the option to carry with us hundreds even thousands of music titles and listen to them on the go. One day this weekend I would like for you to not take your music with you. Instead I want you to dock your ipod or create a computer playlist, find a comfortable easy chair in your house, get something soothing to drink, sit back and escape for an hour in some of your favorite music. Leaders need that time to just unwind and listening to your favorite music in a relaxing ch...

Leader Leisure part 2

How is your weekend going? Are you spending time unwinding from the busy week you had leading others to success? I hope Saturday's blog helped give you some ideas to try. Today I am going to give you two more things you can do to help yourself relax and unwind on the weekend. This weekend we are focusing on family and staying around home. Make one of your weekend nights a movie night.       If you have kids watch a movie early that the whole family will enjoy. Depending on their ages a classic animated Disney or Pixar one is always a good choice. If you want one that isn't animated I recently saw Mr. Popper's Penguins that was a funny and entertaining movie. After the kids are in bed watch one that you like, make yourself popcorn and just lose yourself in the story. On Sunday be sure to go to church.      Hopefully you don't have a leadership role at church. Regardless of what religion you are faith is important to refreshing you...

Leader Leisure Part 1

All hardworking leaders need some leisure no and again. The weekend is the time for leisure. This weekend we are focusing on the time you spend with family. The leader needs time to rest, rejuvenate and relax and release yourself from the duties as a leader. What things can you do this weekend with your family that will help you avoid those leadership decisions? Here are two suggestions. I'll give you two more on tomorrow's blog. Go out to eat with your spouse or a loved one.           Find a restaurant that you both enjoy and go spend some quiet time away from the home and the office. Enjoy the ambiance of the restaurant and pick your favorite comfort food that is on the menu. Mine is fish, any meal I eat that includes fish and I'm not talking shrimp is comforting and relaxing for me. What is your comfort food? If you have kids play a game of their choice. If you don't have kids either play a game with some friends or enjoy an individ...

Leader Life

It is Friday and soon the weekend will be upon us. It is sometimes hard for leaders to pull away from that leading and just relax and enjoy the weekend. It is however very important to do so. If you find yourself being a leader during the week and then on weekends volunteering for projects that require your leadership you may find yourself burning out. It's okay to volunteer but find some time for yourself. As a leader you need the weekend to refresh and renew, decompress a little so you are energized for the week ahead. In this blog I am going to try and spend every weekend looking at ways leaders can escape from the life of leading and become just another face in the crowd. This will be an opportunity for you to find places to go and things to see that don't require your leadership abilities. This weekend I am going to focus on family time. Every Friday I will introduce the topic and then on Saturday and Sunday I will address two to three items that can make your weeken...
